How to Create a Calming, Organic Bedroom for Better Sleep
We all know how important a good night’s sleep is—especially for busy homesteading and homeschooling families! But did you know that the environment in which you sleep can have a major impact on how well you rest? Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, a place where you can fully relax and recharge after a long day. By creating a calming, organic space, you can promote better sleep and enhance your overall well-being.
Here’s how you can design a bedroom that fosters relaxation, using natural materials, soothing colors, and simple, organic decor to help you drift off peacefully every night.
1. Choose a Neutral, Soothing Color Palette
The colors in your bedroom set the tone for relaxation. Neutral, earthy tones like soft whites, warm beiges, muted greens, and gentle blues create a calming atmosphere that’s perfect for winding down.
Tips for a Calming Color Scheme:
Opt for natural shades inspired by nature, like sage green, sand, or soft gray. These colors evoke a sense of calm and harmony.
Avoid bright, bold colors that can be overstimulating. Instead, stick to softer tones that promote relaxation.
Incorporate natural materials such as wooden furniture or woven baskets to complement the organic color scheme.
2. Use Organic Bedding and Textiles
Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so it’s important that it feels both comfortable and healthy. Using organic, natural bedding can improve your sleep quality and reduce exposure to harmful chemicals found in synthetic fabrics.
Tips for Organic Bedding:
Invest in organic cotton, linen, or bamboo sheets that are soft, breathable, and free from harsh chemicals. These materials are not only better for your health but also for the environment.
Layer your bed with cozy, natural fiber blankets like wool or cotton for added warmth and texture.
Choose a non-toxic mattress made from natural materials like latex or organic cotton. These mattresses are free of harmful chemicals and provide better air circulation while you sleep.
3. Incorporate Natural Lighting
Lighting plays a big role in creating a calming space. During the day, let as much natural light into your room as possible to create a bright, airy atmosphere. In the evening, switch to soft, warm lighting to help your body wind down.
Tips for Lighting:
Use sheer curtains to allow natural light to filter through during the day, creating a soft, relaxing glow.
In the evening, switch off harsh overhead lights and use soft, warm-toned lamps or fairy lights to create a cozy atmosphere that’s conducive to relaxation. I love these soft glowing Himalayan salt lamp lights in our bedroom sconces.
Consider using natural beeswax or soy candles for an even softer light that promotes calm and adds a gentle, soothing scent to your room.
4. Add Calming Scents with Essential Oils
The sense of smell can play a powerful role in relaxation, and essential oils are a great way to introduce calming scents into your bedroom. Certain oils, like lavender and chamomile, are known to promote relaxation and help improve sleep quality.
Tips for Using Essential Oils:
Use a diffuser to fill your room with a calming blend of lavender, cedarwood, and chamomile about 30 minutes before bed.
Make a pillow spray with a mix of lavender essential oil and distilled water, and lightly mist your pillow before you go to sleep.
Keep a small bowl of dried lavender or a scented sachet in your bedroom to add a gentle, calming fragrance to the space.
This is one of my favorite sets of essential oils to use in my diffusers around the home - especially to create a relaxing environment in the bedroom for better sleep.
5. Declutter and Simplify Your Space
A cluttered space can create a sense of chaos and make it difficult to fully relax. Keeping your bedroom clean, simple, and free of excess clutter will help your mind unwind at the end of the day.
Tips for Decluttering:
Limit decor to a few meaningful, natural pieces—like wooden accents, plants, or woven baskets—to keep your space simple and calming.
Store away any items that don’t belong in the bedroom, such as paperwork, electronics, or kids’ toys.
Use natural storage solutions like wicker baskets or wooden shelves to keep your space organized without sacrificing aesthetics.
6. Bring Nature Indoors with Plants
Plants not only purify the air, but they also help create a peaceful, organic environment that promotes relaxation. Adding a few potted plants to your bedroom can enhance the overall sense of calm.
Best Plants for the Bedroom:
Snake Plant: Known for its air-purifying qualities, the snake plant is easy to care for and thrives in low light.
Lavender: With its calming scent, lavender adds a natural fragrance to your room while promoting relaxation.
Aloe Vera: This plant is low-maintenance and known for its air-purifying abilities, making it a great addition to any bedroom.
Creating a calming, organic bedroom doesn’t require a complete overhaul—just a few simple changes can make a big difference. By choosing natural materials, soothing colors, and adding elements that encourage relaxation, you can transform your bedroom into a peaceful retreat that promotes better sleep.
